What and how to impregnate a wooden playground?

playground waterproofing

Wood is a natural, ecological and relatively inexpensive material, very popular for playground construction. Despite its high durability, it is susceptible to weathering.

Cold weather, heavy rainfall or strong sunlight shortens its lifespan, so additional wood protection is essential. There are many waterproofing products available in stores – water- or wax-based, varnishes, paints or stains. The choice is really large, but the most recommended are multi-component acrylic paints, which simultaneously preserve the wood, soften its texture and give color. They are more effective, impressive and safe for children, as they do not contain harmful substances. They also save time. When choosing a product for impregnation, avoid oil-based agents, which disrupt the natural regulation of wood moisture, making it rot faster.

Getting to work

If you have decided to buy a ready-made wooden playground, it has most likely been impregnated at the factory. Nevertheless, this activity should be repeated, at least once a year. Therefore, when buying a preservative, you need to check whether it is suitable for covering previously painted surfaces. When you have chosen the right preservative, and the weather is favorable, it is time to thoroughly clean the entire structure. The next step is to level the surface. You will get rid of large stand-offs and splinters with a metal scroll. The rest should be smoothed, such as with sandpaper, regardless of whether the wood is raw or painted. Sanding will rub off the previous layer of paint, which will increase the adhesion of the new product. After finishing polishing, the playground is worth dusting off.

It’s time for the “nail of the show” – waterproofing. Before using the paint, read the manufacturer’s recommendations. This will tell you what is the best way to apply it, what is the drying time and how many coats should be applied for full protection. Once you know everything, start painting – always in the direction of the wood grain.

Advantages of impregnation

Impregnation protects wooden playgrounds, swings, playhouses and gazebos from nesting insects, decay, rot and even mold. Wood is more resistant to the effects of adverse weather and mechanical damage. It is also easier to clean due to the smooth coating created by the paint. No bigger dirt sticks to the wood, and you can quickly and effectively remove smaller stains with a simple cloth. For a long time you can forget about splinters and your children’s play will be safe.
